How it works

The two letters are the whole point. Stratum corneum ceramides are named for the fatty acid first and the sphingoid base second: N for a non-hydroxy fatty acid, A for an alpha-hydroxy one, O for omega-hydroxy and E for an esterified omega-hydroxy; then S for sphingosine, P for phytosphingosine, H for 6-hydroxysphingosine, DS for dihydrosphingosine. Ceramide NS is therefore a non-hydroxy fatty acid on a sphingosine backbone. The older numbering system called the same thing Ceramide 2.

Ceramides are one of the three lipid families that make up the mortar between corneocytes, along with cholesterol and free fatty acids. Applied in a moisturiser they contribute to that lipid layer, which is why they turn up in products aimed at dry and easily irritated skin.

The evidence

Moisturisers built on physiological lipids have a respectable record for dry skin, and ceramides as a category are a well-studied part of skin biology. That is the honest level at which the evidence sits: the category is solid.

Evidence for any single subclass is thinner than evidence for the mixture. Human stratum corneum contains many ceramide subclasses at once, and laboratory work on barrier recovery treats the balance between ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids as part of what makes a lipid mixture work rather than a detail. A product listing one ceramide is not doing anything wrong, but it is naming one member of a family rather than reproducing the family.

Suitability

  • Suits dry, tight and easily irritated skin, and is unremarkable on other types
  • Best read as part of a lipid blend — look for cholesterol and fatty acids alongside it rather than a single name
  • Cosmetic ceramides are usually synthesised; some are produced by fermentation or derived from plants, so the source is a supplier question
  • Not an active in the sense a retinoid or an acid is: it supports the barrier rather than changing how the skin behaves

Concentration

No figure is given. Ceramides are used at low levels, and what the literature treats as mattering is the composition of the lipid mixture rather than the percentage of any one component. A product quoting a high single-ceramide percentage is answering a question the barrier does not ask.

Conflicts & combinations

Nothing conflicts with it. It is a natural partner for cholesterol and free fatty acids, which is how it appears in the skin, and it sits well after acids or a retinoid where a barrier-supporting step is wanted. There is no reason to keep it away from anything, and no need to separate it in time from the rest of a routine.

What do the letters NS mean?

Is Ceramide NS the same as Ceramide 2?

Are cosmetic ceramides animal-derived?

Usually not — most cosmetic ceramides are synthesised, and some are made by fermentation or derived from plants. If it matters, it is a question for the brand rather than one the INCI name answers.

Can I use it with retinol or acids?

Yes, and it is a sensible thing to follow them with. There are no documented conflicts and no need to separate the steps.
