Slip

Slip is the first thing anyone notices about a formula and the last thing anyone can put into words. It is the difference between a serum that covers a cheek in one pass and one that drags and needs a second pump, and it comes from the oil phase and the polymers rather than from whatever the front of the bottle is selling.

The materials chosen for it fall into a few families. Silicones spread into a thin even layer and finish dry. Light esters and branched hydrocarbons give a cushioned glide that seems to sink in. Certain polymers add a slick, faintly soapy feel while the water is still there. Plant oils differ enormously among themselves, which is why two facial oils with similar ingredient lists can feel unrelated.

It matters beyond comfort for one reason: dose. Sunscreen is the clearest case, because the protection printed on the label assumes an amount most people never apply, and a product that drags is a product used sparingly. Slip also decides whether a layer sits still or rolls into pills when the next one goes over it.

What it cannot do is tell you the formula works. A slippery cream and a draggy one can carry the same actives at the same levels. Feel decides whether the tube gets finished, which is worth a great deal in results — it is simply not evidence.
