Rheology
Two formulas can carry the same ingredients at the same percentages and behave nothing alike, because thickness is not a single number. A product has one viscosity sitting still and another while it is being spread, and the gap between the two is where most of the texture work goes.
The usual mechanism is shear-thinning. At rest a thickener holds a loose internal structure that resists flow, so the gel stays on the fingertip and does not run out of the pump. Under the shear of being spread that structure comes apart and the same material moves like a liquid. Stop, and it rebuilds. This is why a gel can be firm in the jar and effortless on skin, and why stirring a lotion appears to thin it.
Yield stress is the companion idea: the force a material needs before it will flow at all. Anything carrying suspended particles depends on it — a mineral sunscreen, a pigmented cream, a gel with visible beads in it. Below the yield point nothing settles, so what the formulator suspended stays suspended for the life of the pack.
None of it is efficacy. Rheology decides how much you use, how evenly it goes on and whether it rolls up under a second layer, which are real questions worth caring about. A thicker product is not a stronger one.
