Encapsulation

Encapsulation is a delivery technique rather than a single technology. A liposome is a lipid bubble that can carry water-soluble cargo inside it; a cyclodextrin is a ring-shaped sugar with a hollow centre that a small molecule can sit in; a polymer or silica shell physically separates the ingredient from everything else in the formula until it is broken.

Two problems drive it. The first is stability: retinol, vitamin C and some botanical antioxidants degrade on contact with water, oxygen or another ingredient, and a shell buys them shelf life. The second is tolerance: an encapsulated retinoid arrives at the skin gradually rather than all at once, which lowers the peak concentration and, in principle, the irritation that comes with it.

The claims are usually plausible and rarely quantified. A brand naming an encapsulation system almost never publishes how much of the ingredient is actually encapsulated, how quickly the shell releases it, or whether the encapsulated version outperformed the plain one in a comparison on people. Encapsulated is a description of the raw material, not a measured result.

It also does not mean deeper. Some carriers do improve penetration, but many do the reverse by holding the ingredient at the surface for longer, and "delivers it where it is needed" is a marketing sentence rather than a claim about a target. Treat encapsulation as a reasonable reason to expect better stability and gentler onset, and as an open question on everything else.
